On April 15th, the Oxford High School Science Olympiad Team made team history by becoming the first Oxford team to ever win first place overall at the Mississippi Science Olympiad State Tournament, hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi. This team of 17 students (15 regular team members and 2 alternates) competed in 26 different events, ranging from Air Trajectory to Astronomy and Protein Modeling to Potions and Poisons! The events spanned a wide range of activities, some of which involved building something ahead of time. Other events were simply written tests. Some competitions involved working through a lab-based procedure such as “Chemistry Lab” or “Forensics”, where competitors had to determine the identity of an unknown substance and draw conclusions based on their findings.
“Many schools have courses designed to specifically hone these skills and focus directly on each event,” said team coach Jim Reidy. “Oxford High School got together a group of students with a variety of talents and no “focused” training to come out ahead and beat the competition!”
This impressive state win means the Oxford Team now has the opportunity to represent Mississippi on the national level! The National Science Olympiad Tournament will be held on May 20th and 21st at the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Sixty teams from around the country and beyond (including Puerto Rico and Japan) will compete in 23 events to rank the top teams for 2016.
With the state competition and national tournament taking place only a month apart, the Oxford team has had a very short amount of time to collect the funds necessary to make the trip to Wisconsin. “In a span of about 3 weeks the OHS Science Olympiad Team was able to fundraise on a level that was unprecedented!,” said Mr. Reidy. “We would like to send out a special thanks to all the people and businesses that made this event possible for us. As the coach of the team, I would like to also point out that none of this would have happened if it weren’t for the drive and tenacity of the team members that got out there and did the organizing and leg-work that it took to make all of this possible. The students of Oxford High School, and especially the OHS Science Olympiad Team, are an amazing group of young people! These are our future scientists, engineers, and leaders…I am so proud of their accomplishments!”
